Prague apartments – Gas leakage detection and temperature monitoring

Initial situation

The main task was to eliminate the danger connected with possible gas leaks and to detect even a small amount of gas, before it reaches the explosive amount.  At the same time, the device should be usable also for non-emergency situations for temperature monitoring and users had to be able to check the values online or export them for further use.
This need of increasing the security measures appeared after a gas explosion in the centre of the city in spring/2013.

Applied solution

For the monitoring were used HWg-STE+ units, capable of connecting temperature and humidity probes and gas detectors. STE+ can connect also other dry contact inputs, however these were not required in this case.
HWg-STE has a web interface, can generate graphs of collected values, supports SNMP, Modbus/TCP, email and other features. Because of these features, it was possible to allow an online viewing of the data and at the same time the data from all apartments can be centrally gathered by HWg-PDMS software.

Benefits for the customer

Down to HWg-STE+’s ability to work with gas detectors and temperature probes, only one STE unit was needed for each apartment. This helped to thoroughly monitor the area and discover any possible gas leak. Temperature measuring allows the tenants to see the current temperature in their apartments online and can also notify about an unusual temperature increase and therefore work as a fire alarm too.
Data from temperature probes were also collected and evaluated, which helped to adjust the heating and air conditioning for better effectiveness.
In case of an alarm situation HWg-STE+ sends 2 email alerts, one to tenant’s email address and one to the owner.
 

Options of the system expansion

This option was chosen for its highest cost effectiveness and compatibility with temperature sensors, however there were more eventualities available.
It would be possible to use Damocles MINI and monitor only gas leaks. One unit in every floor then allows connecting up to 4 gas leak detectors. Damocles MINI also notifies about alarms by sending email messages.
Last option is using Poseidon 2250 with a GSM modem. Poseidon is compatible with temperature probes and gas detector, plus notifies about alarms via email and SMS messages.
